October 17, 2011

This week is full of figurative language, factors, and finally finishing our land form models!  The students had a great time painting their land and water forms this morning. Tomorrow, we will label them and send them to the media center for all to see. In language arts we will review similes and metaphors, find examples in PEAK, and write exquisite examples of our own.  Then, we will learn about idioms and hyperbole, two kinds of figurative language that our fifth graders are less familiar with.  In Science, we will investigate topographic maps and study contour lines. The students will be using 3-D contour map pieces to make a small topographic map of their own.  After reviewing factors, the students will learn about the GCF (greatest common factor) and using factor trees for prime factorization in math class.
