February 26, 2013

Things are really hopping here at the JYJ!  As part of our new learning contract about Westward Expansion, the students are reading Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix, doing research on Lewis and Clark, and learning about the Louisiana Purchase this week.  In conjunction with this, the students are working on comparing themes, characters, and settings in literature of the same genre. The kids are LOVING the story and are actively engaged in activities about this fascinating time in history.  In addition, we listened to an AWESOME rap written by a fifth grade Science teacher about biomes today.  After a brief introduction to the 7 major biomes of the world, the students will work in cooperative groups to create a Biome in a Bag. Rubrics and directions will be handed out in class tomorrow. In math, we are working on building the skills needed to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
