Wacky Tacky Hair and Wear Day!

Our class had a great  time celebrating Spirit Week. Check out our wacky tacky costumes!

October 29, 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful time at the Joyner Jamboree! I was so bummed to miss it, and I hope that someone has pictures to share.  This week the students are learning about theme and  author's tone.  We are reading an annotated version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and investigating how he used great vocabulary, figurative language, and imagery to evoke emotion from the reader.  In math the students will take a unit post test on adding and subtracting decimals on Friday, November 2. We will be playing review games and practicing skills to ensure concepts are understood and skills are intact.  The current weather conditions are providing an opportunity to study a real world weather problem. The students are engaging in valuable discussion and making connections to what they have studied about weather and climate.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week so far and enjoying the beautiful weather! The Case21 Benchmark tests begin tomorrow.  These are the county-wide quarterly tests for all Wake County students (much like the Blue Diamond tests from a few years ago.)  The students will take the reading assessment tomorrow, the math assessment Thursday, and the Science benchmark on Tuesday, 10/30.  The testing will occur in the morning, beginning at about 8:50.  I reminded the kids to get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast!

If you would like to be a volunteer this year at Joyner or assist on any field trip, we need for you to please register through the electronic volunteer system in our media center. All approved volunteers from the 2011-2012 school year must re-activate no later than October 31st in order to continue as approved volunteers during the 2012-2013 school year.

The Parent meeting for Human Growth and Development will be on Friday, 10/26 at 5 pm, before the Joyner Jamboree. This meeting is for parents, but students can wait in another room and them attend the jamboree. The meeting will be help in Mrs. Lewis's room across the hall from our classroom.

In language arts the students continue to learn about how authors use figurative language to engage, entertain, and make their writing more descriptive.  The students are writing and illustrating their own examples of simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification, idioms, and hyperbole.  In reading, we finally discovered that Mibb's savvy is not waking people up but in fact being able to read people's thoughts and ideas through ink! Savvy is turning into a favorite story for many of the students.

All of the fifth graders will take an assessment Thursday on decimal place value, comparing, and rounding. We will continue to work on solving real world problems using addition and subtraction with decimals.

In science, the students are investigating weather and climate. This week we are focusing on weather instruments, cold and warm fronts, and weather patterns.

Thanks so much to Alexandria for making our class some delicious treats from the Rohald Dahl Cook Book she signed out from the JYJ library!  The porcupine spines and crystals were fantastic!

In language arts this week we will focus on figurative language and theme.  Students will review what they have learned about similes and metaphors, and then add some new concepts to their repetoire of concepts. Idioms, personification, and hyperbole will be introduced and students will rotate through different stations to learn about and use them.

In math the students are continuing their learning of decimal place value, comparing, rounding, adding, and subtracting.  They worked with a partner on The Mellow Mushroom Challenge today. The winners will be announced in class this week.  Expect a quicky quiz on Wednesday assessing the skills listed above.

The cold, dreary weather today made for a great way to introduce some of the abstract weather concepts! The students are making Weather Word flip books and working in groups to identify how latitude, longitude, and altitude affect the weather and climate of an area. After this, they will investigate the weather and climate in different areas to write a persuasive letter convincing their parents to move to a certain location.

Homework 10/8/12

October 1, 2012

Wow! Is it really October already?

This month is full of fun events and activities at Joyner!  It begins this Thursday, October 4, with Breakfast Club from 8-8:45am in our classroom.  Those students who did not miss more than one homework assignment and who remembered to get their HW agenda signed on a consistent basis will enjoy breakfast instead of doing morning work.  Thursday is also picture day, and then there is Math Night from 5:30-7:00pm!  Joyner’s Beautification Day is on Saturday, October 13th from 10:00 to 2:00. Bring your garden tools and help make our campus even more beautiful. Plan to drop by anytime during this time. The Fifth Grade Parent Human Growth and Development meeting (which I thought was going to be before Math Night) is scheduled for Friday, October 26 at 5:00pm.  This will lead directly into the Joyner Jamboree that begins at 5:30.  There is so much to do it's frightening! (Sorry, teachers love the opportunity to toss in cheesy holiday humor wherever we can get away with it!)
