Here is a copy of our first vocabulary list of the school year!  Students should be working on their vocabulary contracts over the 2 weeks.  All activities will be collected the morning of the quiz (Friday, September 9.)

PEAK/Landforms Vocabulary List #1
1.      altitude- (n.) height above see leve
2.      ascend- (n.) the act of climbing or traveling up
     
3.      base camp- (n.)  a central setup of tents where food, equipment, and medical supplies are stored;
            a relay station for climbers
    
4.      contour lines- (n.) lines on a map that show the elevation of land
     
5.      crampons- (n.) Metal frames with spikes worn on hiking boots for ice climbs
     
6.      crevasse- (n.) a deep, open crack in a glacier
     
7.      elevation- (n.) how high an object is off the ground
     
8.      glacier- (n.) a large body of slow moving ice
     
9.      precarious- (adj) unstable or not secure
     
10.  summit- (n.) the highest point of a mountain
    
11.  plate- (n.) a section of the Earth’s surface (made up of the crust and upper mantle) that is
            slowly, constantly moving
   
12.  porter- (n.) a person who carries supplies
   
13.  sirdar- (n.) A Sherpa leader on a mountaineering expedition.
    
14.  sherpas- (1). (n.) local people from Nepal who are hired to lead climbers up the Himalayan 
                                      Mountains. 
         (2) Sherpa-(n.)  A clan of people originally from Tibet who live along Nepal's  
                   mountainous eastern border with Tibet

15.  slope- (n.) an inclined or slanted surface; ground that has a natural slant or incline
